Creative Writing

Inspiring a Future Generation

School Visits from Paul Fredrics

Paul and Fred visit schools up and down the UK and overseas delivering inspirational workshops in the power and practicality of creative thinking for both songwriting and story writing.

Tapping in on our many years as storywriters/songwriters and using our experience as leaders of the first UK workshops for the Nashville Songwriter Association International (NSAI), we share our stories and show pupils that being creative is something that every one of us can achieve.

We work with children and young people from year 5 up to A level and beyond. Our workshops are fun, practical and engaging – no boring lectures here – and are very much a collaboration between us and the class.

Here’s a little taste of what you can expect.

Workshops are split into two parts:

Session One. The craft of songwriting. This is tailored to suit the audience and their relative experience of music, but primarily aims to show the pupils that rather than being something unattainable, writing a hit song is 90% perspiration and 10% inspiration. Songs don’t come floating out of the ether, they are made and carefully crafted. We will show you the tricks and secrets so anyone can get out of bed on any day and start writing.

Title Search. Using popular magazines, newspapers and leaflets we begin with a title search, narrowing the options down until we have a favourite. By the end of the session the class will have created at least a verse and a chorus and will more often than not be proudly singing it loudly to their teachers.

Session Two. Story Writing. Getting started.

This will again be tailored to the audience and will follow a similar pattern to the first session with the emphasis on class participation. We will focus on using photographs and images to find those great ideas for stories and how to develop them from a few lines and thoughts into a fully-fledged story.
